Program Strength

Quarry Lane also has substantial success for students who are nationally competitive in their event. We regularly have students qualify for and succeed in the three of the most prestigious “end of the year” national championships in the nation: the National Speech & Debate Association’s Nationals (“NSDA”), the University of Kentucky’s Tournament of Champions (“TOC”), and the National Debate Coaches Association's National Championships ("NDCA"). Roughly 66,000 students across all events compete in national circuit tournaments during the year, and around a little over a thousand qualify for NSDA, TOC, or NDCA Nationals.

1 Students measure the number of students who qualify to either NSDA Nationals, NDCA Nationals, or the TOC. A debate team of two students counts as two students, and one student who qualifies for both the TOC and NSDA counts as one student. It excludes participants in NSDA National’s supplemental events (since they are optional and non-qualification based). It includes students that qualify but choose or are unable to attend.

2 Awards measure a recognized achievement by the NSDA, NDCA, or the TOC. Debate students are eligible for both elimination round placement awards and prelimination rounds speaker awards. Speech students are eligible only for elimination round awards.
