Program Size

A team’s success is only as strong as it’s foundation. Central to Quarry Lane’s speech/debate program is a commitment to new and intermediate students. To us, it’s important every student improves in speech/debate, not just those already at the top. There are approximately 8,500 institutions who have competed in at least one tournament in the National Circuit. Quarry Lane consistently ranks in the top 10%, and ranked in the top .5% this most recent school year.

1 Tournaments measure the number of different tournaments QL students have the opportunity to attend throughout the school year. No student attends every tournament, but fits their schedule, skill level, and event specialty to a larger tournament calendar. This only counts tournaments on tabroom.com in the National Circuit and excludes tournaments we attend not on tabroom.com or on tabroom.com, but not in the National Circuit (probably just 3 or 4 in 2019-2020, but more than a half dozen in 2013-2014).

2 States measure the distinct geographical states that host tournaments we attend. These generally represent nationally competitive varsity level tournaments our more experienced students attend. D.C. and other countries are counted as separate “states”.

3 Students measure the number of active students on the roster for the given year. Roughly correlates with unique QL students who compete in at least one tournament in the national circuit for Quarry Lane.

4 10+ Students measures the number of students who competed in 10+ tournaments during the year.

5 Entries measure the number of tournament entries (sum of student times number of tournaments for each event). Thus, a student who attends 6 tournaments, and competes in two events in 3 of those tournaments (and only one event in the other three) would count as 9 entries. This only counts entries for tournaments in the National Circuit, and excludes tournaments for other regional circuits we also participate in (e.g. CHSSA or GGSSA). Sadly, there are no participation statistics for all circuits aggregated, so participation statistics for the largest and most prestigious circuit will have to suffice.

6 National Rank measures Quarry Lane’s ordinal national rank based on tabroom.com. This only includes tournaments in the National Circuit (see footnote 4).

7 NA means some data is not readily available.
